# Envy[^1]
What we feel when we want something that another person has.
- [[🔑 Envy and Jealousy point to what's important to us]]
- [[Jealousy and Envy are often confused]]
###### Plain Envy (Friendly Envy? Frienvy?)
“Ah, your vacation pictures are amazing, I’m so jealous! I wish I could go, but I'm glad you got to.”
###### Malicious Envy
“You went on vacation while I worked 60 hours a week. You didn’t deserve it, and I’m going to put you down for having it.”
Malicious envy is often a sign of [[🛡️ Perfectionism|perfectionism]]. We have [[🛡️ Criticizing|judgmental parts]] who hold us to an unrealistic or unreasonable standard and then criticize others for not “following the rules.” We aren’t really angry they took a vacation, we’re angry we’re holding ourselves to an unfair standard and are projecting that anger at others.
When we experience this we can either stay envious or we can feel inspired — because it means we don’t have to be perfect.
